Just One Chesed – Who We Are
Who is Just One Chesed?
The simplest answer would be a chesed network. Just One Chesed is an online platform that connects between chesed organizations and potential volunteers. The Jewish community is filled with people who are looking to give back, and we wanted to make that process as simple as possible. But really, there would be no us without you. Without the thousands of amazing volunteers offering their time, effort and money, our mission wouldn’t be possible. Afterall, a chesed network means nothing without people to do the chesed.
What Inspired Just One Chesed?
The inspiration to start Just One Chesed didn’t come from one singular event, but rather an accumulation of experiences. The main experience, however, goes back to 2010 when Jerry Latinik, a Chicago native, made the decision to organize a Shabbos of achdus. Following the 2008 market crash, a number of people in Jerry’s community were facing financial difficulties. “My goal with this Shabbos was to lift the spirits of local Jewish families and individuals who were going through a particularly trying time.” By banding together seven shuls from his area and working within a very tight budget, Jerry quickly learned that money wasn’t the only way to give back.
It was the success of this event that allowed Jerry to imagine more. He had experienced first hand the power of chesed and was now eager to continue spreading it. It was then that he came up with the idea of a chesed network. An organization that would work as the central hub to connect those in need with the people who were looking to help out. As Jerry described it, the network would be “a platform that is all about chesed; to put multiple chesed opportunities in one place so they are easily accessible to all.”
Just One Chesed Today
While it may have taken six years for Just One Chesed to launch, the experience since has been unforgettable. In just four short years we have reached global awareness. Organizations and volunteers alike are joining from all over the world. We have had over 2,000 volunteers join our network and 500 chesed opportunities posted. We find ourselves growing constantly; with each day bringing new opportunities to spread kindness through just one chesed.
